I recently submitted this viz for Tableau's Viz As Art contest. It was trees as countries where the height represented life expectancy. Although I was nominated in the top 10 (thank you Tableau) but I am pretty sure I got smoked by the competition.
But I didn't love my entry because although it looked kinda cool it was wicked confusing to read and was generally silly. So I recreated it in Tableau. Check out my re-design below. It was inspired by (rips off) this beautiful recession viz from the New York Times.
The line chart shows life expectancy by country from 1963 to 2013. The axis represents life expectancy rank and year similar to the recession viz. The line thickness is population and the color is continent. Hover to highlight continents and click to highlight/filter countries.
